Maharashtra government raises DA by 3% for 14 lakh employees.

The Maharashtra government announced a 3% increase in dearness allowance for around 14 lakh employees on Tuesday. The revised DA and arrears for eight months will be paid with the February salary, adding a monthly burden of Rs 150 crore to the state government. The total dues amount to Rs 1,200 crore, which the government will cover. This announcement follows threats from government employee associations to go on strike for various demands, including the DA increase.

The government notification approved paying the 3% increase in DA with arrears from July 2024 to state employees. The Central government raises DA for its employees every January and July, followed by Maharashtra doing the same. The state government had increased DA by 3% in July 2024 but hadn’t paid it until now. The notification means 14 lakh employees will receive the updated DA. Additionally, the state Cabinet agreed to establish new veterinary colleges in Pune and Beed districts.

Days after the announcement by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to abolish new veterinary colleges at Baramati and Parli, proposals for the move were swiftly approved, completing all necessary procedures within a month. The government revealed that the newly sanctioned veterinary colleges aim to deliver high-quality services to livestock owners and contribute to the state by increasing the number of skilled veterinarians. These institutions will be pivotal in safeguarding the health and growth of Maharashtra’s livestock.

Approval was given for two veterinary colleges due to a shortage of veterinary services. Each college will have 96 permanent faculty and 138 non-teaching staff. Additionally, 42 contract staff will be hired externally.
