Lisa Ray discusses the 'unfilmy film' 'Kasoor,' where she could dress realistically in black tailored clothes.

Lisa Ray revisited Vikram Bhatt’s 2001 film “Kasoor”, calling it a unique break from typical movies. She posted music videos like “Kitni Bechain Hoke” and “Dekha Jo Tumko” on Instagram, showcasing her nostalgia for the movie where she starred alongside Aftab Shivdasani.

In 2000, Lisa highlighted the refreshing nature of a film from the #BhattCamp, led by @maheshfilm and Mukesh Bhatt, known for producing unconventional Hindi films. She discussed how “Kasoor” stood out with its portrayal of an independent female lawyer named Simran Bhargav, challenging the limited female roles typical of that era. The film portrayed her intriguing relationship with a mysterious client, portrayed by @aftabshivdasani, at a time when female characters were often relegated to minor roles or glamorous dance scenes.

The film follows Shekhar, accused of killing his wife, who hires lawyer Simran believing in his innocence. As their relationship deepens, Simran remains oblivious to his true intentions. Lisa noted the film’s depth and how the realistic wardrobe adds to the story’s realism, despite being inspired by an American film. It was a dark and mysterious film with an edgy tone for its time, featuring a female-centric story where black tailored clothes were prominent except in certain scenes.

Despite initially resisting Bollywood and not feeling a connection to typical storylines and film culture due to similarities and fear of performing in front of large groups, Lisa ultimately overcame her shyness after meeting director Vikram Bhatt and agreed to step out of her comfort zone to act in Kasoor, despite her lack of experience in acting prior to this opportunity.

The actress is amazed and grateful that, after many years, the soundtrack by Nadeem Shravan is remembered and meaningful. She sees how various factors can blend to create something cherished across generations, bridging the past and present in the timeless world of Hindi films, a realm that truly complements her essence and would not be the same with anything else.
