Filmmaker Kiran Rao, known for ‘Laapataa Ladies’ and ‘Dhobhi Ghat’, highlighted Indian OTT’s need for more groundbreaking content at the Indian Screenwriters Conference. She emphasized that while progress has been made in elevated storytelling and writing achievements, there is still much more to explore and accomplish on streaming platforms.
She mentioned the presence of self-censorship in today’s TV writing, restricting storytelling possibilities. This contrasts with the freedom seen in American TV during its peak, allowing for deeper character development and exploration of diverse themes. The director also noted this trend in various industries but expressed uncertainty about its impact in India.
She mentioned the need to attract more audience to OTT, which grew during Covid-19. Contents on OTT in India are similar to films, not fully exploring world-building. The initial promise faced a setback due to a bursting bubble. OTT was seen as a platform for limitless creativity but the reality is different. Despite potential, it’s uncertain how many stories are being greenlit due to economic considerations. The golden age of OTT may have passed, leaving the future unclear. Notwithstanding, there is quality content on OTT in India, yet more can be explored and achieved.
She mentioned having series ideas and a mini-series in mind but nothing has been approved yet for streaming projects. She expressed uncertainty about the direction she wants to take, mentioning a desire to possibly adapt her series ideas into films.
ISC will end on Sunday featuring established screenwriters such as Shoojit Sarkar, C Prem Kumar, Christo Tomy, and more, who will discuss their techniques and experiences, sharing insights on their successful works and adapting to industry changes.
