Phuloni, Karbi Anglong: The Karbi community joyfully celebrated Karbi Ningkan Kimi, or Karbi New Year, on February 1, 2025 (Thangthang 1st), marking a time of renewal and preparation for the year ahead. This significant occasion, deeply rooted in Karbi tradition, signifies the beginning of Jhum cultivation, a shifting agricultural practice followed by their ancestors.
The grand celebration took place across Karbi Anglong, with Phuloni being one of the key venues. Mrs. Sabina Teronpi, a dedicated handloom revivalist and cultural preservationist, was invited as a guest speaker. In her address, she spoke about the cultural and agricultural importance of the festival and also highlighted the symbolism of the new year as a time for fresh beginnings, unity, and collective progress. She emphasized the importance of preserving Karbi traditions while embracing new opportunities for growth and development.
The event was marked by traditional rituals, cultural performances, and reflecting the Karbi people’s deep connection with their heritage and nature. Karbi Ningkan Kimi continues to be a celebration of identity, unity, and cultural pride, bringing together people from all walks of life to honor their ancestral traditions and welcome a prosperous year ahead.
