Janata Dal (United) is grappling with internal discord as five leaders resigned in protest of the party’s support for the Waqf Bill. Tabrez Hasan, the latest to depart, was the vice president of the party’s youth wing. Before Hasan, four others resigned as well, citing similar concerns, including JDU State Secretary Mohammad Shahnawaz Malik, State General Secretary Mohammad Tabrez Siddiqui, Bhojpur-based member Mohammad Dilshan Rain, and former candidate Mohammad Qasim Ansari.
Hasan sent his resignation to the JDU chief and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, expressing disappointment in the party’s support for the Waqf Bill. He cited this as a breach of trust with Muslims who believed in the party’s secular values. He also criticized the NDA government’s pattern of decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370, triple talaq law, and CAA, which he felt were detrimental to Muslim interests.
Hasan expressed disappointment over the shift in your image but admired your alignment with anti-Muslim forces. His resignation symbolized a fresh start rather than a conclusion. Earlier, his pleas in Urdu and Hindi against the bill were disregarded. Upon leaving JDU, Hasan emphasized that this marked the beginning, not the end, of his responsibility.
Parliament approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 after debates in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The bill passed with 128 votes for and 95 against in Rajya Sabha, and in Lok Sabha, it saw 288 in favor and 232 against. Despite this, political controversy over the Waqf Bill continues.
The Waqf Bill sparked senior resignations in Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), hinting at dissatisfaction. Controversy arose over the bill’s approval within the NDA ally before the Bihar elections. This conflict might impact the party’s performance in the upcoming state assembly polls.
