Veteran actor and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan defended comedian Kunal Kamra amid a dispute over his comments. She raised concerns about the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression in India during a Parliament speech. Bachchan criticized the current situation, highlighting that freedom seems limited to chaotic actions like attacking the opposition or committing crimes.
Bachchan criticized the vandalism at Habitat Comedy Club, where Kamra’s show was held, questioning the impact of speech restrictions on personal freedom. She expressed concern over potential limits on topics and questions allowed. The comment followed vandalism by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) youth wing members at the show venue.
The controversy erupted when Kamra criticized Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. In response, Shinde’s youth wing disrupted a show at the Habitat Comedy Club, damaging the set. The attack followed the release of Kamra’s Naya Bharat special, leading to FIRs against Kamra for his comments and the youth wing for vandalism.
According to The Indian Express, Maharashtra CM criticized Kamra’s remarks, emphasizing limits to freedom of stand-up comedy. Fadnavis demanded an apology, warning against tolerance to such speech. In contrast, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut supported Kamra, condemning Sena workers’ vandalism as hooliganism, advocating for freedom of speech. Kamra maintained his stance when questioned by police.
