Japan made history by securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the first team. They achieved this by defeating Bahrain 2-0 in Saitama, with both goals in the second half. This victory occurred as Japan comfortably advanced three games early in Asia’s qualification rounds.

The Asian Football Confederation has 8 spots in the 48-team tournament; an extra spot is from inter-continental play-offs. In the third round, 18 teams are split into three groups. The top two from each group earn their World Cup berth. Japan easily won Group C, securing their eighth consecutive World Cup qualification.

Under Hajime Moriyasu, Japan performed exceptionally in the qualification rounds, winning all six second-round matches and maintaining an unbeaten record of six wins and a draw in the third round. Japan lead Group C in FIFA World Cup Qualifying – AFC, with 6 wins and 1 draw after 7 games. They have 19 points, ahead of Australia (10). Scoring 24 goals and conceding just 2, Japan dominates the group.
