The BCCI has a new rule prohibiting Indian cricketers’ families from joining them on short overseas tours starting with the 2025 Champions Trophy in the UAE. This policy stems from India’s recent 3-1 series loss in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The BCCI’s new policy doesn’t permit family travel on tours under 45 days. Families can join for two weeks every 45 days on longer tours. The Champions Trophy starts on February 19 in the UAE with India playing Bangladesh first. India’s matches will follow a hybrid model agreed by the cricket boards.
According to a BCCI official, players are unlikely to bring wives or partners on this tour. The official mentioned that the policy on this will be followed as per a senior player’s inquiry. Any exceptions would necessitate individuals covering expenses as the BCCI won’t provide financial support.
The leaked BCCI policy allows players on overseas tours to have their partners and children visit for up to two weeks per series if they are away for more than 45 days, subject to approval by the coach, captain, and GM Operations. BCCI won’t cover expenses outside the specified visitor period.
Families can join the team for the five-Test tour of England post IPL 2025. Exact dates for their two-week stay will be set closer to the tour, aligning with BCCI’s policy of permitting family visits on tours exceeding 45 days.
The BCCI official confirmed that several policy rules, like mandatory domestic cricket participation and team travel for matches, are now in effect. Private vehicle requests for practice are banned and all state units are informed. The team has been traveling together since their gathering in Kolkata and Nagpur for the T20I and ODI series against England.
The BCCI now limits player’s personal staff travels, including chefs and secretaries. A few chefs will be hired to cater to specific players’ diets. Restrictions also apply to managers, agents, and chefs who previously accompanied the team. These changes follow India’s 1-3 defeat in Australia, prompting the introduction of new regulations.
