A new GPS-based toll collection system will launch on India’s national highways starting from May 1, replacing the existing FASTag system. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) launch date was moved to May 1 from the initial plan of April 1 due to delays.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the upcoming switch to a satellite-based toll collection system, with a new toll policy set to be announced within 15 days. Gadkari emphasized that travelers will no longer need to stop at toll plazas, thanks to the satellite toll system, which uses GNSS to track vehicles’ locations and calculate toll charges based on distances traveled.
The GNSS system will automatically deduct toll charges from a driver’s bank account based on distance traveled, making it a more efficient and cost-effective solution. Gadkari confirmed the system’s time-saving benefits compared to the old one. Additionally, GNSS offers flexible payment options, enhancing convenience for road travelers in India.
