India has strongly responded to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir during his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Exercising its Right of Reply, India condemned Sharif’s comments, calling them an example of “hypocrisy at its worst.”
During his speech, PM Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing position on Kashmir, accusing India of violating the rights of the Kashmiri people and urging the international community to intervene in resolving the issue. He portrayed Kashmir as a disputed territory, pointing to the revocation of Article 370 in 2019 as a turning point that escalated tensions between India and Pakistan.
India, in its reply, dismissed Sharif’s remarks as baseless and a distraction from Pakistan’s internal issues, such as its severe economic crisis and human rights violations. The Indian representative asserted that Pakistan, which shelters terrorism and uses it as a state policy, has no standing to lecture on the human rights of Kashmiris. India’s delegation emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and that the region’s political and constitutional status is an internal matter.
The Indian envoy further criticized Pakistan’s persistent attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue at global platforms, accusing the country of diverting attention from its own internal failures and support for terrorism. India highlighted the need for Pakistan to focus on addressing its own problems, including its dwindling economy and violations of minority rights, rather than interfering in India’s internal affairs.
This exchange at the UNGA is a continuation of the long-standing diplomatic battle between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. Both nations regularly use international platforms to highlight their respective stances, with India maintaining that Pakistan’s claims lack credibility due to its track record on fostering terrorism.
India’s sharp rebuttal to Pakistan at the UNGA highlights the ongoing diplomatic friction between the two countries over Kashmir. By calling out Pakistan’s hypocrisy, India reinforced its stance that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter, urging Pakistan to focus on its own domestic challenges.
