India reduces import duty on high-capacity motorcycles, benefiting US brand Harley-Davidson.

India has reduced import duties on high-capacity motorcycles in the 2025-26 Union Budget, benefitting Harley-Davidson amid a positive signal to the new US administration led by President Donald Trump. The new import duty rates are now 40% for completely built-up motorcycles up to 1,600 cc, down from 50%, while semi-knocked down kits will be taxed at 20% instead of 25% and completely knocked down units will face a 10% duty instead of 15%. This move aims to boost domestic manufacturing, as per government statements.

India plans to reduce customs duty on high-end products like specialized steel, motorcycles, and electronics. The Harley-Davidson 440X, the smallest bike in its range, is jointly produced and sold in India by Hero MotoCorp. The budget also decreases the tariff rate on luxury cars above $40,000 from 125% to 70% to meet rising demand. Hero MotoCorp, manufacturing the Harley-Davidson X440 and Hero Mavrick 440, sold 12,188 units of these models from April to December 2024.

Hero MotoCorp saw a 77% year-on-year sales increase, holding a 13% share in the segment. The Harley-Davidson made in India at Hero’s Garden Factory offers three variants priced at Rs 2.40 lakh, Rs 2.60 lakh, and Rs 2.80 lakh. Industry data show sales of 8,974 units from April to December 2024, a 31% rise.
