Vote counting for Delhi Assembly election started at 8:00 am. Early trends show BJP leading in 38 seats, crossing halfway mark of 36, while AAP is behind with 26 seats. The outcome will determine if AAP led by Arvind Kejriwal secures a fourth term or if BJP forms government after 27 years.
A total of 699 candidates, including 603 men and 96 women, competed in the elections. Notable candidates were former Chief Minister Kejriwal from AAP, Parvesh Verma from BJP, and Sandeep Dikshit from Congress. Exit polls suggest BJP likely to win between 35-49 seats, AAP 21-37 seats. Congress may secure up to three seats.
With 36 seats needed for a majority in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the AAP secured 67 seats in 2015 and 62 in 2020. In comparison, the BJP improved from 3 seats in 2015 to 8 in 2020, while the Congress didn’t win any seats in either election, being wiped out in 2020 as well.
All three parties’ election manifestos include freebies such as monthly grants for women, free healthcare for the elderly, and various schemes. The AAP’s pledges free bus rides and youth initiatives, while the Congress offers free healthcare, electricity, and a monthly ration kit. The BJP vows a stipend scheme for Scheduled Caste students and 33% job reservations for women.
