The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) revealed a significant finding on the benefits of mother’s milk for infant health. The study, featured in the Food Chemistry journal, highlights how fat globules in human milk can naturally deliver probiotics. This research may lead to enhanced baby formulas that offer nutrition and promote gut health.
Led by Professor Kiran Ambatipudi, the study explores the protective role of the Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM) in delivering beneficial probiotic bacteria to infants’ guts. These probiotics are crucial for shaping the gut microbiome, particularly for premature babies, boosting immunity and overall health. Through their research on two key infant bacteria types, the team confirmed these microbes’ ability to establish in the gut and support digestive wellness.
The milk fat globule membrane shields probiotics in the stomach and intestines, enhancing their survival and function while safeguarding the infant’s gut from harmful microbes and stress. These findings hint at a potential for functional infant formula development.
By utilizing mother’s milk components to deliver probiotics, baby nutrition could be transformed with formulas mimicking natural breastfeeding more effectively. This advancement resonates with Indian government initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting health and self-reliance through scientific progress.
