The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India, Ministry of Textiles is committed to the overall development and welfare of artisans and other stakeholders associated with the handicrafts sector. In this regard, the office implements various schemes aimed at enhancing artisans’ skills, promoting business growth, strengthening marketing linkages, and encouraging the production of high-quality exportable handicraft products through the fusion of new designs, patterns, and motifs. The department also provides marketing platforms under one roof through the organization of national marketing events and exhibitions, thereby facilitating greater outreach and market access for artisans.
Recently, the Hon’ble Secretary (Textiles), Government of India, Ministry of Textiles advised senior officers of the department to maintain regular interaction with stakeholders, including artisans and weavers, whether or not they are currently benefiting from departmental schemes. The objective of this initiative is to foster closer engagement with stakeholders and organize welfare-oriented activities alongside departmental programmes, or independently where feasible, so as to strengthen the relationship between the department and the artisan community both socially and emotionally.
In pursuance of these directions, a comprehensive Health Camp was organized by the Western Regional Office (WRO), Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Mumbai, for artisans participating in the ongoing National Gandhi Shilp Bazaar at CIDCO Urban Haat, Navi Mumbai, held from 06 March to 15 March 2026. The initiative aimed to promote health awareness and provide essential medical services to artisans engaged in showcasing traditional handicrafts at the bazaar.
The health camp benefitted approximately 120 artisans and participants. The programme was conducted with the valuable cooperation and medical support of Apollo Hospitals and Centre for Sight, whose professional medical teams provided free medical consultations and health screening services to the artisans.
During the camp, a range of essential medical check-ups and diagnostic services were offered, including:
-
Blood Sugar Test to identify and monitor diabetes-related conditions.
-
Blood Pressure and Heart Check-up to assess cardiovascular health and detect early signs of hypertension or heart-related concerns.
-
Eye Check-up, conducted by specialists from Centre for Sight, to diagnose vision problems and provide appropriate eye-care guidance.
-
General Health Check-up, including basic medical consultation and advice on overall health and wellness.
-

The health camp received a very positive response from the participating artisans, many of whom appreciated the opportunity to access quality healthcare services conveniently at the event venue. Medical professionals also shared valuable information on health awareness, preventive care, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which is particularly important for artisans who often work long hours under physically demanding conditions.
The Western Regional Office (WRO) expressed its sincere gratitude to Apollo Hospitals and Centre for Sight for their cooperation and commitment to supporting this community health initiative. Such collaborative efforts significantly contribute to ensuring the health and well-being of artisans, who play a vital role in preserving and promoting India’s rich handicraft heritage.
