Matipung, Diphu, Assam, January 11, 2025 : The Guru-Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Program, a two-month training initiative focused on cane and bamboo craft, was inaugurated today at Matipung, Diphu, Assam. The program, which will train 30 artisans, is sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and organized by the Assam Small Industries Development Corporation, Guwahati.
The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Smt. Sarbina Teronpi, a National Awardee in Textiles from Karbi Anglong. Her presence as an eminent figure in the textile and handicraft sector inspired the participants and attendees.
The Guests of Honour, Smt. Kakrunti Sopi, President of the Lingboi Society, Phuloni, Karbi Anglong, and Shri Bidasing Rongpi, Lamp Chairman, Phuloni, Karbi Anglong, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the region’s rich tradition of cane and bamboo craft.
Representing the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Shri Romit Roy, HPO, delivered an informative session on the various schemes and support provided by the Ministry of Textiles for artisans and craft development.
The training program is being conducted under the guidance of master craftsperson Shri Mukesh Saikia from Nagaon, Assam, who will mentor the artisans in advanced techniques and innovative designs to enhance their skills and market readiness.
This initiative aims to revitalize the traditional cane and bamboo crafts of Assam, empowering artisans with the skills and knowledge needed to expand their market reach and sustain their livelihoods. It also serves as a platform to preserve the region’s cultural heritage while fostering economic development.
The Guru-Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Program will conclude in March 2025 with a closing ceremony where the participants will showcase their creations.
