Google Calendar caused controversy by removing significant events such as Pride Month, Black History Month, Indigenous People Month, Jewish Heritage, Holocaust Remembrance Day, and Hispanic Heritage from its default display. This action has sparked criticism and disappointment from users who are frustrated by the decision. Although complaints and media reports have been ongoing for years, these notes have now been entirely removed.
Google acknowledged the feedback and adjusted default Calendar events due to challenges in keeping up with a worldwide list of cultural events. The changes were implemented to address difficulties in maintaining a consistent global calendar. Google spokesperson Madison Cushman Veld explained that they have collaborated with timeanddate.com for over a decade to display public holidays and national observances in Google Calendar.
Veld explained that the Calendar team initially added various global cultural moments manually. Due to feedback on missing events and the difficulty of managing hundreds of global moments, they now only display public holidays and national observances from timeanddate.com. Users can manually add other important moments on Google Calendar.
