Gemini will replace Google Assistant on smartphones this year, marking the end of an era.

Google plans to replace Google Assistant with Gemini in late 2025. The tech giant announced that the “classic Google Assistant” will no longer be available on most mobile devices. Millions have already switched to Gemini, prompted by updates providing Deep Research access for all users yesterday.

Users with phones running Android 9 or older, who lack at least 2GB of RAM, won’t be affected by the transition to Gemini and can still enjoy the current Assistant experience. Google seeks to enhance the day-to-day experience of Gemini, especially for existing Google Assistant users, and aims to refine the new assistant’s quality before discontinuing the old version.

Gemini, launched in February 2024, initially lacked some phone assistant features. Now, Google has enhanced it with capabilities such as lockscreen access. The company plans to expand Gemini to watches, cars, tablets, and headphones, following the introduction of features on Pixel Buds and Wear OS devices.

Google is developing Gemini to be a personal assistant that boosts productivity and creativity by integrating with your existing apps and services. They are also creating a new experience for speakers, displays, and TVs powered by Gemini. Expect further updates on this in the coming months.
