Agartala, 1st October 2024: The Gandhi Shilp Bazar, a celebration of the rich handicraft heritage of the Northeastern Region (NER), was inaugurated today at Agartala Urban Haat, Tripura. The event is organized by the Assam Small Industries Development Corporation Limited (ASIDC), Guwahati, Assam, and is sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The bazaar will showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of 50 artisans from Tripura and neighboring Northeastern states from 1st October to 7th October 2024.
The inauguration ceremony took place at 6 PM, graced by the presence of Shri Kishor Barman, Honourable Chairman of Tripura Handloom, Handicrafts, and Development Corporation Ltd. (THHDC) and MLA, as the Chief Guest. Shri Sukhamoy Saha, Chairman of Agartala Municipal Corporation’s East Zone (AMC-EZ), and Smt. Manimukta Bhattacharjee, Corporator of Ward No. 22, served as Guests of Honour. Special guests for the event included Shri Hara Kanta Baro, Regional Director (NER), Office of the DC(Handicrafts), Guwahati, Assam, and Smt. Pampa Karmakar, Assistant Director, Office of the DC(Handicrafts), Handicraft Service Centre (HSC), Agartala.
The welcome address was delivered by Shri Umesh Nath, General Manager of ASIDC Ltd. The event was officially inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri Kishor Barman, who lit the ceremonial lamp, followed by speeches from all dignitaries. The speakers highlighted the importance of promoting the handicraft sector in the region and emphasized the need for the upliftment and empowerment of artisans through such initiatives.
The Gandhi Shilp Bazar aims to provide a platform for artisans from the Northeastern Region to showcase and sell their handcrafted products, reflecting the unique cultural heritage of the region. The bazaar will be open to the public from 1st to 7th October 2024, offering a wide range of traditional handicrafts, textiles, and handmade products.
This initiative is a step towards supporting the livelihoods of artisans, preserving traditional crafts, and promoting the economic development of the handicraft sector in the Northeast.
