Ferrari is developing a virtual engine and gear-shift system alongside a distinctive “sound signature” for its upcoming electric vehicles. A recent patent application hints at these plans. A Ferrari EV prototype spotted in Maranello earlier emitted an engine-like sound, showcasing the brand’s commitment to recreating the traditional driving experience in their future electric lineup.
Ferrari’s patent describes an electric motor system that replicates an internal combustion engine’s torque and gear shifts. The accelerator pedal and virtual gear control the torque output. This system enables drivers to experience simulated gear shifts through steering-column paddles, similar to other Ferrari models.
The second patent application details an EV audio-control system with interior and exterior speakers. These reproduce digitally created sounds matching a virtual engine and transmission model, customizable to suit driver preferences – historical, modern, futuristic, adrenaline-fueled, or relaxed. The system also offers specific gear shift sounds, enhancing the driving experience for Ferrari’s upcoming EVs.
Ferrari aims to evoke the emotional essence of its combustion cars in EVs, aligning with their goal of replicating the driving experience. It’s unclear if this system will feature in Ferrari’s initial EV, yet it reflects the company’s dedication to creating an engaging driving experience for all drivers.
