The Karnataka health department found carcinogenic chemicals in idlis from certain hotels and street vendors, who used plastic sheets for steaming instead of cotton cloths. This discovery may lead to a state ban on plastic in the food industry.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed 52 hotels used polythene sheets for idlis. Laboratory tests on 500 idlis from 251 places found 51 unsafe due to carcinogens. TOI states plastic sheets contain harmful chemicals like BPA, phthalates, affecting food when heated. These chemicals release toxins and microplastics, accumulating in the body, increasing cancer risks such as breast and prostate.
The government responded to violations by imposing fines and encouraging the public to report ongoing misuse. Rao emphasized the importance of reporting any further use of harmful materials. He also highlighted efforts to educate the food industry and consumers on the risks of using carcinogenic substances in cooking. Additionally, PC Rao confirmed that reputable hotels abstain from using plastic in idli preparation.
Rao, as reported by News18, mentioned that reputed hotels avoid using plastic covers in idli preparation and have been warned against it. The state has enforced various food safety measures in the past, such as banning peanut chikki in schools and prohibiting harmful food colorings like Rhodamine-B. Rao emphasized that failure to comply could result in up to seven years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹10 lakh.
