Former Miss Bangladesh and model Meghna Alam is currently detained in a Dhaka prison. Arrested on April 9 under the Special Powers Act, she is accused of endangering public safety. This arrest followed her statement about an affair with a married ambassador, prompting a police raid on her house that she broadcasted on social media.
Muhammad Younus’s government detained Alam for 30 days under special powers, her supporters say. She has been held without charges. Before her arrest, Alam live-streamed an incident accusing the Bangladesh police’s Detective Branch of breaking into her Dhaka home on April 9 to arrest her.
Bangladeshi media reported that Alam is accused of trying to extort $5 million from Essa Yousef, the former Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh. In a deleted Facebook post, Alam claimed that Essa Yousef, the Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh, was detaining people through the police to stop Alam from sharing the truth on social media.
Badrul Alam revealed that his daughter, Alam, initially agreed to marry Yousef, only to discover he was already married. The ambassador was romantically involved with Meghna, but Alam refused his proposal due to his existing family. Subsequently, Alam voiced her fears about receiving threats and feeling unsafe in public.
Government advisor Asif Nazrul commented on the arrest of actress Alam on April 13, stating that although there were allegations against her, the arrest under the Special Powers Act was not carried out correctly. Alam, who won the Miss Earth Bangladesh beauty pageant in 2020 and chairs the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, is a well-known figure in Bangladesh.
