Europeans are hesitant to purchase Tesla's electric cars.

Tesla’s European sales dropped sharply, despite growing EV popularity. In April, the company’s sales plummeted in various countries such as the UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, and France. This pattern mirrors the US, where Elon Musk’s political ties triggered controversy and protests.

In the UK, Tesla’s Q1 sales were strong, but April saw a sharp 62% drop according to SMMT. Despite an 8% rise in overall EV sales that month, other European countries also faced declines: Denmark by 67%, Netherlands by 74%, and Portugal by 33%.

Tesla’s declining European sales aren’t solely because of Musk’s politics; competition, notably from Chinese automaker BYD, also plays a significant role. BYD is poised to surpass Tesla as the top EV maker by 2025.

Analysts anticipate Tesla’s full-year sales will continue to decline due to recent drops and criticism of Musk. Gordon Johnson from GLJ Research, known for his bearish views on Tesla, expressed concern, stating that the upcoming quarter for Tesla in Q2 2025 may replicate the challenges faced in the first quarter of that year.
