The EU has directed Apple to improve iOS compatibility with rival technologies as part of the Digital Markets Act aimed at preventing tech monopolies. This marks a key enforcement action within a year of the DMA coming into effect, leading to various EU Commission investigations into big tech firms.
In September, the EU initiated two proceedings to define Apple’s DMA obligations. A binding decision requires Apple to grant access to nine iOS connectivity features, enabling wider use by non-Apple devices. This enhances compatibility for app and device makers with features like smartwatches and wireless headphones.
The EU’s decision enables third-party developers to utilize Apple’s wireless file transfer tech, fostering the creation of apps similar to AirDrop. The Commission suggests enhancing transparency and efficiency for developers to access iPhone features, with improved access to technical documentation not yet accessible to third parties.
Apple expressed dissatisfaction with the EU’s decision, concerned that complying with the DMA may impact its products and users. The company believes that the DMA could require sharing innovations with competitors for free. Nevertheless, Apple committed to collaborating with the European Commission to address these user-oriented concerns.
The EU faults Google for DMA non-compliance and biased search rankings. Despite some adjustments by Google, its self-promotion in search results persists. Preliminary findings indicate Google may overcharge for downloading apps. The Commission finds excessive fees on digital purchases by Google.
