Elon Musk's DOGE project cancels $21M funding aimed at boosting voter turnout in India.

The Elon Musk-led DOGE canceled a $21 million initiative to raise voter turnout in India. DOGE revealed this during a post, sharing about past US-funded foreign political projects. The $21 million was from a $486 million US allocation for enhancing elections and political processes under the Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening.

The Indian government and Election Commission haven’t responded officially to the funding withdrawal for India’s elections. The $486 million package also included allocations for Moldova, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Liberia. Sanjeev Sanyal, an Indian economist and historian, questioned the fund allocation after DOGE’s announcement on X.

Sanyal is curious about the recipients of large sums from USAID, questioning the allocation of US$21 million for voter turnout in India, US$29 million for political landscape in Bangladesh, and US$29 million for fiscal federalism in Nepal. His criticism sparked debate over foreign interference and USAID’s role in funding international political activities.

Established by Donald Trump, DOGE seeks to enhance government efficiency by implementing automation and AI tools in US offices, sparking debates on job and cost reductions. These actions have triggered legal challenges on constitutional grounds.
