The Enforcement Directorate is conducting raids at OSF’s Bengaluru offices, founded by George Soros, as part of a FEMA investigation into potential foreign exchange violations. NDTV reported that premises of former Amnesty International staff and current Human Rights Watch employees were also searched.
Officials are examining a case where OSF is suspected of using foreign direct investment in a way that may breach FEMA rules. Amnesty India and Human Rights Watch were previous recipients of OSF funds. CBI charged the former, and ED lodged a complaint against the latter.
Soros and his OSF organization have faced criticism from India’s ruling BJP for allegedly working against the country’s interests. The party condemned Soros’s comments suggesting PM Modi would be questioned by foreign investors after accusations of fraud and manipulation against the Adani Group, which was highlighted in a report by the OCCRP, supported by OSF.
