The Delhi government introduced the draft of Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, a notable shift in its electric mobility plan. The policy aims to increase electric vehicle presence on Delhi roads from 13-14% to 95% by 2027. It includes measures such as halting petrol bike registrations, retiring ICE three-wheelers, and enhancing charging infrastructure.
The draft policy suggests a significant change for two-wheelers, proposing to halt registration of petrol and CNG bikes in Delhi from August 15, 2026. This could impact popular models like the Hero Splendor. Officials note these recommendations may be revised during cabinet approval.
The proposed policy outlines a plan to phase out ICE three-wheelers completely. Starting in August 2025, the government will halt registrations for petrol, diesel, and CNG three-wheelers. Both passenger and cargo three-wheelers are included. Additionally, existing CNG auto permits won’t renew after August 15 this year, as they will be switched to e-auto permits.
The draft policy mandates that every third vehicle purchased must be electric; for example, if a person owns two fuel-powered vehicles, the next must be electric. All garbage trucks of Delhi’s authorities will transition to electric, aiming for a fully electric fleet by December 31, 2027.
The draft policy emphasizes the expansion of charging infrastructure in Delhi. Currently, the city has 1,919 charging stations and 232 swap stations. The exact number of new stations to be created is not yet disclosed, but this expansion will likely support the EV transition plan under Policy 2.0.
