Acting President Choi Sang-mok expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI of Morocco for a major train contract secured by a South Korean company. Hyundai Rotem Co., a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, will provide double-decker electric trains to ONCF under the 2.2 trillion-won deal.
Choi, in a letter, thanked the Moroccan government for trusting and showing interest in South Korea’s advanced companies. The finance ministry disclosed that Hyundai Rotem landed the largest railway contract for a South Korean firm abroad. The ministry expects the deal to greatly benefit local businesses, with 90% of train parts to be sourced from 200 nearby small and medium-sized enterprises.
Hyundai Rotem’s deal in Morocco is its first in that market, setting a new record as its largest railway supply contract. Previous major contracts include the Australian NIF project (1.4 trillion won), the Queensland train supply contract (1.3 trillion won), and the Los Angeles Metro contract (900 billion won) for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The double-decker trains, reaching speeds of 160 kph, will link Casablanca to vital areas, boosting Morocco’s transport network for the 2030 FIFA World Cup co-hosting. Local production will aid Morocco’s railway industry growth.
Hyundai Rotem and KORAIL will jointly handle train maintenance through separate talks. The success was credited to cooperation among various government bodies, especially the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
