Centre has 4 weeks to decide on Rahul Gandhi's citizenship.

The Allahabad High Court has granted the Indian government four weeks to determine Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship status, with the decision scheduled for April 21. Questions about Gandhi’s citizenship have been prominent for years, intensified by a complaint filed by Subramanian Swamy in 2019. The complaint alleged that Gandhi had declared British citizenship in documents submitted to UK authorities.

Swamy argued that Gandhi’s admission of British citizenship violated Indian law, including the Constitution and Citizenship Act, insinuating that it equated to holding a British passport. He mentioned that the government sent an inquiry notice to Gandhi regarding his British citizenship but received no response.

On Monday, the court requested the Centre’s lawyer for updates on Swamy’s petition and his appeal to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The bench clarified that they were not seeking a decision on core case issues, just directions on his representations. “We are not addressing the main matters…We’re focusing purely on guidance for his submissions. Please provide details regarding the status of proceedings related to the letter,” the bench explained.

The government informed the Allahabad HC that a petition challenging Gandhi’s dual citizenship is being considered. During a plea by advocate and BJP leader Vignesh Shishir, who seeks a CBI probe into Gandhi’s citizenship, he mentioned having confidential UK government emails confirming Gandhi’s citizenship status.
