An increase in deaths due to Japanese encephalitis has been observed in Assam.

Assam is experiencing a significant outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis, resulting in 26 deaths so far this year. The virus has affected almost all districts except two, leading health authorities to intensify their efforts and monitor the situation closely. According to health experts, Assam accounts for half of India’s Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases, primarily affecting children under 10 and seniors over 60. Since April, the state has reported 300 confirmed cases. The local environment favors the mosquito-borne virus’s spread. To combat this, Assam has been conducting extensive vaccination campaigns since 2013 and has incorporated the JE vaccine into the standard immunization schedule for young children.
