The BJP named Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s new chief minister after a 7:00pm party meeting attended by central observers OP Dhankad and Ravi Shankar Prasad. This marks the BJP’s return to power after 26 years, winning 48 out of 70 seats in the recent elections and ending the AAP’s 10-year reign.
A seasoned BJP leader, she secured a victory as one of the four elected women MLAs by defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari in the Shalimar Bagh constituency with a significant margin of 29,595 votes. Gupta’s swearing-in will take place at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, said to be a historic event by BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh. The ceremony will feature a cultural program at 11:00am, followed by the oath-taking at 12:35pm.
Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah, and other leaders will likely attend the ceremony expected to draw 30,000 guests. The guest list includes BJP state CMs, Union Ministers, NDA leaders, RSS members, gurus, industrialists, and celebrities. Invitations were also extended to community representatives and BJP campaign supporters.
After AAP’s defeat, Atishi resigned as former Chief Minister. She temporarily held office for five months since September, succeeding Arvind Kejriwal, who stepped down due to a corruption case related to Delhi’s liquor policy. Kejriwal intended to reclaim his position post the “people’s court” decision.
