From April, Apple will start producing AirPods in India at the Foxconn facility in Hyderabad, marking its second manufacturing venture in the country after iPhones, as reported by PTI. Initially, the AirPods production will focus on exports. Foxconn had approved a $400 million investment in August 2023 to establish the factory.
In 2024, Apple led the global True Wireless Stereo (TWS) market with a 23.1% share, almost tripling Samsung’s 8.5% share. Apple’s decision to produce AirPods in India follows concerns about potential production cuts due to tariffs by US President Trump and Apple’s $500 billion investment in US manufacturing.’
India imposes a 20% import duty on hearables and wearables, while the US does not. The Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) suggests removing these duties could benefit India, especially amidst the Trump administration’s upcoming reciprocal tariffs on several countries, India included, starting April 2.
