Andhra Pradesh is actively courting Tesla to establish an EV manufacturing plant within the state, emphasizing its advantageous port facilities and ample land availability. Initial discussions commenced in October 2024, with State Minister Nara Lokesh engaging Tesla’s CFO Vaibhav Taneja during a visit to the US.
In a move to secure Tesla’s investment, Andhra Pradesh has intensified efforts post PM Narendra Modi’s meeting with Musk. The state offers an enticing incentives package, distinct from other states. Tesla aims to sell EVs in India by April, likely starting with car imports from Germany before setting up local manufacturing.
The port access could help Tesla import cars, and a plant in southern Andhra Pradesh would benefit from a supportive ecosystem of auto firms, battery makers, and suppliers. South India is a significant EV market, with Kerala, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka contributing about 60% to India’s four-wheeler EV sales.
