Airtel collaborates with Jio and Vi to tackle telecom fraud.

Airtel, along with Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea, proposed a joint plan to combat telecom fraud in India amid increasing cybercrime complaints and significant financial losses. Their aim is to enhance scam detection, prevention, and mitigation through real-time intelligence sharing and cross-network coordination.

The rise in cybercrime complaints is attributed to advanced tactics like phishing links and fake loan offers, leading to heightened digital fraud and identity theft cases. Airtel is addressing this trend by enhancing its anti-scam efforts using a fraud detection solution to block malicious sites on various OTT apps and platforms.

Airtel acknowledges the need for better industry coordination to combat rising phishing and URL-based scams. The company notes that these scams thrive on provider coordination gaps. To address telecom fraud, spam, and scams, Airtel introduced a Joint Telecom Fraud Initiative for all TSPs.

In October 2024, Airtel suggested a collaborative approach to address Unsolicited Commercial Communications (UCC) by sharing corporate connection details in a common format. This sharing would enhance spam monitoring and deter misuse. A centralized data-sharing platform akin to Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) was proposed to bolster the fight against UCC while safeguarding legitimate business operations.
