AIADMK has reunited with NDA and plans to run in the election alongside BJP.

The AIADMK has officially rejoined the NDA for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, confirmed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a press conference with outgoing BJP Tamil Nadu chief Annamalai and AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami. Shah announced that AIADMK and BJP will contest the elections together under the NDA umbrella.

Shah announced that Palaniswami will lead the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu’s upcoming Assembly elections. He mentioned that PM Modi will lead nationally, while Edappadi K. Palaniswami will lead on the state level. Shah highlighted the successful alliance between BJP and AIADMK in 1998, under J Jayalalithaa’s leadership, which led to a significant Lok Sabha victory.

In 2021, the NDA, led by Palaniswami, lost Tamil Nadu elections to the DMK coalition, securing 75 out of 234 seats. AIADMK won 66 seats, and BJP secured only 4. In 2022, AIADMK suffered a major defeat against DMK in local body elections, losing control of all corporations.

The rift between Annamalai and the AIADMK worsened due to his criticism of Jayalalithaa and CN Annadurai, and his refusal to ally with Dravidian parties. The discord led to the BJP and AIADMK splitting in 2023. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, both parties contested independently in Tamil Nadu but did not secure any seats.
