AAP allocates ₹150 crore for drug census in Punjab.

Led by the Aam Aadmi Party, the Punjab government allocated ₹150 crore for a comprehensive drug census. This project will gather data on drug usage, de-addiction centers, and residents’ socio-economic status. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema highlighted the importance of this information in developing a strategy to combat the state’s drug problem within one to two years.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal lauds drug census as a pivotal move for a transformed Punjab, prioritizing sobriety over substance abuse. He praises the Punjab Budget as a significant push for a drug-free, thriving state, highlighting major investments in anti-drug initiatives, rural development, and sports facilities by the AAP administration.

Since the launch of the anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh on March 1, Punjab has seen almost 4,000 drug smugglers arrested and over 2,200 FIRs lodged, with a significant seizure of 138kg of heroin. DGP Gaurav Yadav is now urging senior cops to identify major drug suppliers and peddlers in their districts within a week to disrupt the narcotics trade further.

In a bid to combat drug smuggling at the India-Pakistan border, the Punjab government allocated ₹110 crore for anti-drone tech and hired 5,000 guards. However, the AAP’s promised ₹1,000 monthly for women was not included in this year’s budget by Cheema. He mentioned that the plan is pending as they are conducting surveys and will fulfill it soon.
