A US drone equipped with AI chooses its targets independently.

US defense contractor AeroVironment unveiled the Red Dragon drone, able to autonomously select and strike targets, aiming to support US air dominance. The drone can hit targets causing significant damage, reaching speeds up to 160km/h and covering nearly 400km.

Red Dragon, weighing 20kg, sets up and launches in 10 minutes, carrying up to 10kg of explosives. This AI-powered drone operates like a missile, distinguishing itself from US military drones that carry missiles due to its speed and operational capabilities.

The Red Dragon’s autonomous target selection sparks ethical debate due to minimal human involvement. Controlled by AVACORE software, the drone’s actions are guided by its brain. Using AI technology, the SPOTR-Edge system identifies targets. To address oversight concerns, the DoD policy dictates that human accountability with a good grasp of the technology is essential for deployment.
