A student from the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta accused a male classmate of raping her inside the boys’ hostel. The suspect was detained following the woman’s lodging of an FIR at Haridevpur Police Station. She claimed that she was lured to the hostel supposedly for a counseling session.
The woman claimed that she was served a drugged drink by the accused, which caused her to lose consciousness. When she woke up, she discovered that she had been raped. A police officer confirmed to PTI that the woman reported in her FIR that she was invited to the hostel for a counseling session. The officer also stated that she became unconscious after drinking a beverage laced with drugs at the hostel.
The accused was taken into custody and subsequently arrested by Kolkata police. The woman claimed that the accused threatened her with severe repercussions if she revealed the incident to anyone. This event occurred shortly after a separate case where a 24-year-old student was allegedly gang-raped at a law college in Kolkata, leading to the arrest of three men and a security guard from the college.
In the law college case, a medical report verified the survivor’s claims, revealing signs of forced penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches on her body. This incident occurred almost a year after a similar crime at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The recent events have ignited widespread outrage over safety issues on educational campuses in Kolkata.
