Super Deer, a dental care company based in Hefei, Anhui province, China, is under fire for harsh workplace rules. The firm, known as Xiaolumama in Chinese, is criticized for strict regulations like banning mobile phones and restricting office exits during work hours.
Established in 2016, Super Deer dominates 75% of the dental floss products market as of the first half of 2023, with annual sales reportedly hitting CNY 400 million ($55 million). Nevertheless, the company’s rigorous office rules have faced significant online backlash despite its commercial achievements.
Multiple current and former employees have raised concerns about the company’s strict policies, comparing their work environment to “being in jail.” They are constrained from leaving the office during lunch breaks and must stay at their desks throughout their shifts, eating delivery meals. Super Deer faces allegations of withholding contracts, avoiding social insurance responsibilities, and unjustly firing employees.
Liu Chang, a company employee, faced reprimand from her supervisor for using earphones during lunch, prompting her to discreetly communicate with her family using a smartwatch at work. Stricter disciplinary measures were also disclosed, such as punishing employees for incorrect chair positioning, limiting toilet breaks, and monitoring desk attendance. Non-compliance led to disciplinary actions, where employees were required to clean the office.
