From Ancestral Legacy to Global Recognition: The Inspiring Journey of National Awardee Shri M. Farooq Khan and AL TASVEER ART & CRAFTS

Preserving India’s Metal Craft Heritage Through Generations of Artistic Excellence, Entrepreneurship and International Trade

India’s handicraft heritage is not merely a reflection of artistic excellence but also a living testimony to generations of dedication, inherited skills, cultural identity and entrepreneurship. One such inspiring story is that of Shri M. Farooq Khan, National Awardee (2007), a distinguished metal engraving artisan, entrepreneur and exporter who has successfully transformed his ancestral craftsmanship into an internationally recognised business while preserving his family’s artistic legacy.

The foundation of this remarkable journey was laid by his grandfather, Shri Rafi Muhammad, a State Awardee, and subsequently strengthened by his father, Shri Haji Nasiruddin, recipient of the National Award in 1998 and the prestigious Shilp Guru Award in 2007. Their extraordinary contributions to traditional metal craftsmanship received recognition from the Government of India. Carrying forward this distinguished heritage, Shri Farooq Khan, together with his brothers, Shri Mohd Yusuf, National Awardee (2007), and Shri Mohd Yaqub, National Awardee (2015), continues to uphold the family’s artistic excellence.

What makes Shri Farooq Khan’s journey particularly inspiring is his educational background. Having pursued a B.Com. from Delhi University and management education at Symbiosis, Pune, he possessed opportunities to establish a professional career in India or abroad. However, his emotional attachment to ancestral craftsmanship and responsibility towards preserving traditional knowledge encouraged him to choose entrepreneurship in the handicrafts sector over a conventional corporate career.

Recognising the importance of professional identity, branding and international market confidence, the brothers established M/s AL TASVEER ART & CRAFTS, with its registered office at S-33/6, Street No. 24, Main Road, Brahampuri, Delhi–110053. The enterprise specialises in exquisite handcrafted metal engraving products, combining traditional motifs with contemporary designs, refined finishing and utilitarian applications suited to domestic and international markets.

Every creation reflects patience, precision, creativity and the artistic expression of skilled hands. Through continuous market research and exposure to international exhibitions, the enterprise has successfully adapted its products to changing consumer preferences without compromising traditional craftsmanship.

Beyond commercial achievements, the enterprise contributes significantly to artisan livelihoods. More than ten skilled artisans are associated with the establishment, receiving employment opportunities and contributing to the timely execution of orders from corporate clients, exporters and international buyers. While the brothers collectively supervise production and quality, Shri Farooq Khan primarily manages marketing, buyer coordination, export opportunities and business development, effectively applying his educational knowledge to traditional enterprise management.

The firm has reportedly achieved business turnover running into crores of rupees during recent years. According to Shri Farooq Khan, its annual export potential could exceed USD 200,000, subject to sufficient international orders, working capital and production support.

An important milestone was its participation in an international trade fair in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2025, under the sponsorship of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, where the enterprise received encouraging responses and orders from international buyers.

Such initiatives demonstrate how government-supported international marketing opportunities can empower award-winning artisans, establish direct buyer relationships and strengthen India’s presence in global handicraft markets. However, increasing international competition and changing procurement practices underline the need for continued overseas exposure, financial assistance and targeted marketing support for deserving artisans and enterprises.

International exhibitions offer more than commercial opportunities. They serve as platforms for cultural diplomacy, employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and the promotion of India’s traditional identity. Encouraging capable artisan entrepreneurs can therefore contribute meaningfully to the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and economic development.

Continuing this successful journey, M/s AL TASVEER ART & CRAFTS is participating in the 62nd IHGF Delhi Fair–Autumn 2026, showcasing its exclusive handcrafted metal artefacts before national and international buyers.

The journey of Shri M. Farooq Khan and his brothers conveys a powerful message: traditional craftsmanship, when supported by education, innovation, entrepreneurship and appropriate government initiatives, can evolve into a globally competitive enterprise.

Their story proves that preserving ancestral heritage is not merely about honouring the past; it is about creating livelihoods, expanding international markets and building a stronger India through the extraordinary skills of its artisans.
