Italy probes Tesla, Volkswagen, BYD over misleading EV performance claims

Italy’s competition authority is probing BYD, Stellantis, Tesla, and Volkswagen for allegedly misleading consumers about EV performance. Focus is on data concerning “EV driving range, battery capacity degradation, and standard battery warranties,” as per the watchdog.

The authority’s statement suggests possible violations of the consumer code. Under Italian law, firms could face fines ranging from €5,000 to €10 million for infringing consumer rights. Stellantis is cooperating fully with the investigation, providing all required details. BYD and Volkswagen have chosen not to comment on the probes, while Tesla is yet to respond to media inquiries.

The competition authority criticized automakers’ websites for vague electric car range info, lacking details on factors affecting range and battery degradation from normal use. They also lack clarity on battery warranty terms.

The competition authority confirmed raiding the Italian headquarters of four automakers with the Guardia di Finanza. Raids, with Italy’s financial crimes police, are part of an investigation into possible violation of consumer rights, a standard practice in such cases.
