7-Day Gandhi Shilp Bazar Kicks Off at Urban Haat, Dimapur

The week-long Gandhi Shilp Bazar, a vibrant celebration of traditional handlooms and handicrafts, was inaugurated today at Urban Haat, Rajabari, Dimapur. Organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) through the Handicrafts Service Centre, Kohima, the event will run from October 21 to October 27, 2024, featuring 11 handloom weavers and 40 handicraft artisans from the region.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Padma Shri Neihunuo Sorhie, a respected figure in Nagaland’s craft community, as the Chief Guest. Dr. T. Chang, Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, attended as the Guest of Honour, with special guests including Ms. Narola Jamie, General Manager of NHHDCL, Sh. H. K. Baro, Regional Director (NER), Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Sh. Sarbeswar Das, Assistant Director (P), WSC, Dimapur along with guests from other Central and State Government departments also attended the inauguration programme.

The Gandhi Shilp Bazar aims to support local artisans by providing them a platform to showcase and sell their handcrafted products. This year’s edition coincides with the ongoing Khadi Mahotsav (October 2–31, 2024), a national celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and India’s Khadi tradition. A live demonstration of Khadi products by a local weaver drew attention to Khadi’s cultural and economic significance, while the presence of a traditional Charkha at the venue added to the attraction for visitors and buyers alike.

In his address, Dr. Dhiraj Kumar, Assistant Director, Handicrafts Service Centre, Kohima, reiterated the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts)’s dedication to the growth and global promotion of Indian handicrafts. He commended the artisans for their role in preserving traditional crafts and stressed the importance of sustainability and innovation in the sector.

The Gandhi Shilp Bazar is expected to draw significant footfall, offering artisans increased visibility and sales opportunities, while allowing visitors to experience and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Nagaland’s crafts.
